Description:
Watering the engines and the rest of the train always made this operation interesting, if you were too close to the hoses you could end up getting soaked.

Description:
One of the interesting thing about the Big 40's was the numbers added on the "B" end of the engine. I believe after the initial order was deleivered from EMD the Black was added to the upper part and brought around. At some point the vertical numbers of the unit were added but this was not always consistent. On my photo of 649 in this album it has no numbers and of course was the last of the big SDP40F's delivered to Amtrak.

AMTK 582 and another big red nosed 40 bringing the Meteor or Champion into the Amtrak Station
Description:
Next to the 645, the 582 was another unit I would usually try to catch to photograph. It was the only locomotive in the Florida Power Pool out of the middle third of the 40s.

AMTK 582 - A Big Red Nose!
Description:
Even though I worked in Reservations, then Training and finally in a support role for the Field Sales Department in my almost 23 years at Amtrak there were a lot of fond memories both from getting to ride the trains pulled by these brutes as well as spending lots of free time photographing them.
